When I started kicking around the idea of organizing a conference I started by talking to other conference organizers; asking how they got started, what to look out for, what to focus on, etc. Without exception, each one said that they had done the exact same thing when they started their conferences. I decided to document the whole process of organizing my very first conference so that someday, hopefully, someone will come to me with those same questions and I will have it all here.
